Why choose a Ledger hardware wallet?
Your crypto is only as secure as the device that holds your private keys. Ledger hardware wallets store these keys offline in a tamper-resistant environment, keeping them safe from online attacks like phishing, malware and remote hacks. With an intuitive interface and wide coin support, Ledger balances enterprise-grade security with everyday usability.
What you’ll need
- A Ledger device (Ledger Nano S Plus / Ledger Nano X or the latest model)
- A computer, tablet or smartphone with internet access
- The Ledger Live app (desktop or mobile) — free to download
- A quiet, private place to write down your recovery phrase
Step 1 — Unbox and power up
Open the package and verify the seal. Connect your Ledger device to your computer or phone using the supplied cable. Follow on-screen instructions displayed on the device. Ledger’s small, clear display will guide you during setup so you always know what the device is showing.
Step 2 — Create your wallet and secure your recovery phrase
When prompted, choose to create a new wallet. Your Ledger will generate a 24-word recovery phrase — this is the single most important piece of information for accessing your crypto. Write it down on the provided recovery sheet or another secure medium. Never store this phrase digitally (not on your phone, cloud, or computer). If anyone gains access to your recovery phrase, they can control your funds.
Step 3 — Install Ledger Live and add accounts
Download and install Ledger Live on your desktop or mobile device. Open Ledger Live, follow the device connection flow, and install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and hundreds more). Add accounts in Ledger Live to view balances, receive and send assets, and monitor portfolio performance.
Using your Ledger safely — best practices
- Always verify addresses on the device screen: When sending or receiving funds, confirm the address directly on your Ledger display — malware on your computer can alter addresses shown in apps.
- Keep your recovery phrase offline and private: Treat it like cash. Consider using a fireproof safe or metal storage for long-term protection.
- Use official Ledger software and channels: Only download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Beware of phishing sites and messages impersonating Ledger support.
- Enable a device PIN: Choose a strong PIN and never share it. The PIN protects your device if it’s lost or stolen.
Recovering your wallet
If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore your wallet and funds on any compatible Ledger device (or many other wallets) using your 24-word recovery phrase. This is why safely storing the recovery phrase is crucial.
